The twelfth Pan-Slovenian Gathering of Slovenians Abroad took place on 5 July 2012 in Ljubljana. The gathering was officially opened in the big hall of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia and the main topic of a one-day programme was an inter-generation dialogue.

Participants were greeted by Franc Pukšič, chairman of the Commission of the National Assembly for relations with displaced Slovenians, Gregor Virant, speaker of the National Assembly and Ljudmila Novak, Minister for Slovenians Abroad.

Problem of the inter-generation dialogue was presented from the scientific point of view as well as through experience of associations of Slovenians abroad. Sociological and philosophical viewpoints were presented by Professor Marina Lukšič Hradin, PhD (ZRC SAZU) and Mateja Grgič, PhD (Slovenian Educational Consortium) while members of associations from Canada, Argentina, Australia and USA spoke about the importance and efforts to preserve the Slovenian language as the basic builder of cultural and national identity. These topics were discussed at the first Youth Parliament which was simultaneously held in the small hall of the National Assembly.

The attendees were welcomed by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia Janez Janša, who expressed his satisfaction with the number of attendees, as well as his wish to continue preserving links with the motherland and promotion of Slovenian culture abroad.
