At the initiative of the Council of Europe, on 26 September we mark the European language Day every year since 2001. On that day, throughout Europe, there are a number of activities for children and adults.

European Language Day is the day when we mark language diversity and encourage learning of a language. The aim of the event is to make the public aware of the need to learn languages, support multilingualism and intercultural understanding, as well as point to language and cultural abundance in Europe. This event is also marked in the National and University Library in Banja Luka where pupils of supply teaching lessons of Slovenian also participate every year.
During the recitation observers could hear poems by Slovenian poet Tone Pavček »We need a lot of simple words« and »Words, these and others«. Poems by Tone Pavček have been translated into many languages, while our pupils presented them in Slovenian, Serbian, English, German and Russina. There was also a stand of the Association of Slovenians “Triglav” in the hallway of the Library where visitors had the opportunity to see brochures and bilingual books, and eat cakes made of apples and apricot.
